Compounding for Fever
What Causes Fever in Children?
Fever is one of the most common symptoms for which parents bring their child to the emergency department.  Fever may indicate the presence of a serious illness, but usually a fever is caused by common infections which are not serious. Some common causes of fever include:
  • Influenza (flu)
  • Viral Infections
  • Bacterial Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
  • Heat Exposure
How is Fever Treated in Children?
Two common medications used to treat fever in children are acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and ibuprofen (Motrin®).  Both of these medications provide temporary reduction of fever, and relief of minor aches and pains due to colds, flu, sore throat, headaches and toothaches.  Acetaminophen reduces fever and relieves pain. It does not reduce swelling, as do nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, but it also is less likely to cause stomach upset and other side effects.

Children’s strength ibuprofen is only available as an oral medication, and acetaminophen is available orally and rectally. This can be problematic when your child is unable or unwilling to take oral medications.

Compounding Medications for Fever
We have the ability to compound acetaminophen and ibuprofen in various alternative forms.  For example we can compound either medication into a transdermal gel/cream that can be rubbed directly into your child’s skin.  It’s simple to apply and best of all there aren’t any complaints about “gross” tasting medicine, or unpleasant administration issues.
